The Sense & Dollars of Digitalising Learning & Performance

Digitalising learning and performance comes with challenges and opportunities, and in this session, Elliott Masie will focus on the digitisation process. Elliott, a highly engaging speaker, has vast experience in communicating on video platforms, and will share real-life examples and stories intended to help participants imagine how new initiatives can be implemented in their own situations.

This fun and learning-filled session will highlight a number of opportunities and challenges, including examining reasons why businesses are often behind the curve when converting to digital learning delivery. This will also be illustrated with a number of case studies covering both successful approaches and examples where the process has faltered. Participants will also learn from examples of successful business models and key considerations, as well as the implications of these strategies for businesses, training providers, individual learning designers, and practitioners.

Putting Human at the Front and Centre of Digitalisation

Embarking on the path to digitalisation is a Herculean task. More than embracing technologies to stay ahead, it is important not to lose sight of the human factor. When DBS started its digital transformation journey, it took the approach of adopting a user-centred design. This involved putting the user first and foremost, thinking about their needs from their perspective, challenging previously held assumptions, and coming up with solutions to hit that ‘sweet spot’ between business and user needs. 

However, most digital experiences fall short of user expectations. So where did things go wrong? More importantly, how can we get them right? Using DBS’s transformation journey, Chooake Wongwattanasilpa will share how DBS blurs the dividing line between business strategy and user experience to create one of the world’s best bank brands, in which creativity is enabled by technology.

Human-Centered Qualities - The Core of Courage in Disruption

Amidst the disruption faced by many organisations, uniquely human qualities such as foresight, judgment, reliance, and empathy have become even more instrumental for building the immunity that allows individuals, teams, and organisations to evolve and flourish.

This session, led by Dr Robert Coles, synthesises global research by Roffey Park Institute to examine how enterprises and training providers across the world are coping with disruption on multiple fronts. The ways in which life, work, play, and learning are expected and experienced have paradoxically changed while staying the same — and the findings reveal fresh perspectives on the complex relationship between technology and humans. Participants will gain new insights into why some enterprises and training providers are lagging behind in how they conceive the design and delivery of learning, and learn practical pointers that help build an interdependent ecosystem for success to boost an organisation’s learning capital.

Working with the Human Factor - Using Behavioral Insights to Influence Learning & Change

Professional learning and development is a strong driver of career growth. When surveyed, many individuals not only agree but, furthermore, actively prefer workplaces that offer the chance for training and skill acquisition. At the same time, when actually presented with a range of such options, employees very often fail to act or do not take full advantage of them, leading to wasted resources and opportunity costs. What explains this gap between intention and action, and how can organisations  promote more effective decision making when it comes to lifelong learning and re-skilling? 

Insights from behavioural science reveal that employees, in fact, frequently make decisions based on their own biases and rules of thumb, rather than thinking rationally about their own best interests. Using a combination of psychology, economics, and data science, it is possible to better understand how individuals actually choose what to learn, and what keeps them engaged. This understanding can be used to develop tools, incentives, and learning environments that ‘nudge’ them towards more desirable choices. Such insights can be critical for organisational leaders seeking to shape employees’ learning behaviours and motivations more effectively, which ultimately fosters a culture of learning in the workplace.

Track 2 Digitalising Learning: Making It Work

Pivoting from Offline to Online - During and Post Pandemic

Learning and teaching is undergoing a profound change in the way it is accessed and delivered, due to a decrease in face-to-face interactions, and a greater emphasis placed on digital delivery. This session will begin with a discussion highlighting the key differences between online and remote learning, before providing an overview of a case study, focusing on the way in which a local Institute of Higher Learning has adapted to deliver learning to adult learners during the COVID-19 pandemic. This will cover adjustments made to the academic and assessment frameworks as well as accompanying schedules, preparations, and transitions that adult learners and trainers had to undertake, challenges faced by administrators, instructional designers, and technologists, and the ways in which these were overcome. This will then be juxtaposed with examples from community colleges in the USA.

Participants will also get a glimpse of some of the adult learning opportunities lost and gained during the pandemic, highlighted by case studies of individuals, corporates, and institutions who have thrived and built competencies and partnerships. The session will wrap up with a speculative discussion of how adult learning may evolve post-pandemic. Correspondingly, questions of how adult learners, trainers, and institutions may relearn, recharge, and rebound will be explored. Finally, suggestions will be made regarding a review of funding policies relating to adult learning programmes in this new normal.

Delivering Remote Learning - Nine Lessons We Are Learning

COVID-19 has forced many companies and organisations in the fields of learning and development and consultancy to adapt, and ROHEI is no different. Where previously, facilitation was a face-to-face process, it is now necessary to adapt to new learning environments. This is an aspirational learning space which will last beyond the current COVID-19 crisis, and represents a new way of doing things.

In this session, Praise Mok and Aline Eustaquio-Low will unpack nine practical lessons which ROHEI has learned while navigating the current situation. These lessons are characterised by three key ideas:

 

1. Physical distancing ≠ social distancing: this section will highlight three things ROHEI is doing through the e-space in order to stay connected with learners.

 

2. Physical learning ≠ remote learning: this section explores three things being done to design a suitable learning format that encourages continuous engagement with the content.

3. Physical experience ≠ remote experience: this section will present three ways in which ROHEI is supporting learners in the digital environment, to ensure a minimum amount of disruption to communication, collaboration, and learning.

Leveraging Digital Marketing to drive Training and Adult Education Products

Diversifying Training and Adult Education (TAE) products to meet the needs of digital play is more essential than ever, especially following the recent restrictions and experiences stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Other than designing a strong product, it is also critical to leverage various digital marketing channels to attract and engage potential audiences and to build and enhance competitive advantage.  

This session, led by industry marketing practitioner and educator Lim Wee Khee, will focus on what it takes to harness the power of digital marketing to promote TAE products and services. Participants can look forward to an informative session which will explore ways in which digital marketing plans can be effectively created and executed using search, social media, and content. Practical tips, techniques, and industry best practices will also be shared.
